Norethisterone

How does the period delay tablet work?

Norethisterone is the active ingredient in Norethisterone. It works by mimicking the natural female hormone, Progesterone. Falling levels of progesterone trigger the menstrual bleed at the end of your normal cycle. So taking Norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels high and this stops you having your period.

By taking Norethisterone, you can delay your period by up to 17 days.

How do I take Norethisterone?

You should begin taking Norethisterone tablets three days before you expect your normal period. You will need to take one tablet three times per day for up to 20 days. Your period will start around two to three days after you finish taking Norethisterone.

When you consider delaying your period, it’s important to plan ahead. If you start taking the tablets too late, your period may start as normal and won’t be delayed.

What are the side effects of Norethisterone?

When taking the period delay pill, Norethisterone, side effects are rare. However, some people may experience skin rashes, nausea and dizziness.

You cannot take the period delay tablet if you are using the combined contraceptive pill.

The period delay tablet is not a form of contraception so you can still get pregnant whilst taking it.
