Obesity and Weight Management

If your weight has been creeping up, or if previous attempts at losing it have stalled, you are not alone. Around two thirds of adults in England are living with overweight or obesity, and for many people diet and exercise alone are not enough. At Heald Green Pharmacy, our prescribers offer a clinically supervised weight loss service that combines lifestyle support with prescription weight loss treatments where they are clinically appropriate.

You can start an online consultation in a few minutes. If a treatment is suitable for you, our prescriber will arrange dispensing and follow you up throughout your journey.

Prescription Weight Loss Treatments at Heald Green Pharmacy

We offer the latest generation of weight loss injections, prescribed and dispensed under the supervision of our UK-registered pharmacist prescribers. These are GLP-1 medicines, a class of treatment that works by reducing appetite, slowing how quickly the stomach empties, and helping the body regulate blood sugar. They are designed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not as a replacement for them.

The treatments available through our service include:

  • Wegovy (semaglutide), a once-weekly GLP-1 injection licensed in the UK for weight management in eligible adults.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a newer once-weekly injection that acts on two appetite-regulating pathways (GLP-1 and GIP). It has shown strong results in clinical trials and is currently one of the most in-demand weight loss treatments in the UK.

Eligibility is based on your BMI, your medical history, and other clinical factors. Not everyone who applies will be suitable, and our prescriber may recommend a different option, or advise against treatment, if it is not right for you.

How Our Weight Loss Service Works

  1. Online consultation. You complete a confidential medical questionnaire covering your weight, height, medical history, and any medicines you currently take.
  2. Clinical review. One of our prescribers checks your answers against the eligibility criteria for treatment. If anything is unclear, they will get in touch.
  3. Dispensing. If a treatment is suitable, your medicine is dispensed from Heald Green Pharmacy with full instructions on how to use it.
  4. Ongoing support. You can speak to our team at any point during your treatment. We monitor progress, adjust where needed, and step in early if anything is not working.

Is Weight Loss Treatment Right for You?

Prescription weight loss medicines are not suitable for everyone. They are generally considered for adults whose BMI sits in the overweight or obese range, particularly when extra weight is affecting health, and when lifestyle changes alone have not been enough.

You can check your BMI using the NHS BMI healthy weight calculator. As a general guide for most adults:

  • 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight range
  • 25 to 29.9: overweight
  • 30 to 39.9: obese
  • 40 or above: severely obese

BMI is a useful starting point, but it does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Waist measurement can also indicate health risk: in general, a waist of more than 94 cm in men or more than 80 cm in women is associated with a higher risk of weight-related health conditions.

Final eligibility for treatment is decided by the prescriber after reviewing your full consultation, not by BMI alone.

Why Excess Weight Matters for Your Health

Heald Green Pharmacy weight loss support

Carrying excess weight over time is associated with a higher risk of a number of conditions, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure and heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Certain cancers, including breast and bowel cancer
  • Joint pain and reduced mobility
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Low mood and reduced self-confidence

The good news is that even a modest amount of sustained weight loss (around five to ten percent of body weight) can meaningfully reduce these risks.

The Role of Diet, Activity, and Habits

Medication can help, but it works best when it is paired with realistic lifestyle changes. As part of our service we encourage:

  • A balanced, calorie-aware diet rich in vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and fibre.
  • Regular activity, building up towards 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
  • Mindful eating: slowing down, recognising fullness, and avoiding eating out of stress or boredom.
  • Tracking progress in a way that works for you, whether that is a journal, an app, or weekly check-ins.
  • Building a support system, whether that is family, friends, or a community group.

If emotional eating, stress, or low mood is a major factor in your weight, this is worth raising with your GP. Behavioural support alongside medical treatment tends to produce the strongest long-term results.

Speak to Our Pharmacist

Our team has supported many patients through their weight loss journey. If you are unsure whether prescription treatment is the right route for you, you can speak to one of our pharmacists for an informal conversation before starting a consultation. We will be honest with you about whether treatment is likely to help, and we will not recommend a medicine you do not need.

Prescription weight loss medicines are only supplied following an online consultation and clinical review by one of our prescribers, and only where they are considered clinically appropriate. Treatment is not guaranteed. For general information on healthy weight, see NHS Live Well.
