Hepatitis B Profile
October 8, 2024
The Hepatitis B Profile includes tests for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) and Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)
This test can be performed for several reasons:
- Screening: It is commonly used to screen individuals who may be at risk of Hepatitis B infection, such as healthcare workers, pregnant women, or individuals with a history of high-risk behaviours (e.g., intravenous drug use, unprotected sex).
- Diagnosis: The test helps in diagnosing acute or chronic Hepatitis B infection by detecting the presence of HBsAg and other antibodies.
- Monitoring: It is used to monitor the progression and treatment response of Hepatitis B infection. Changes in the levels of HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, and HBeAg can provide valuable information about the stage and activity of the infection.
- Vaccination status: The test can determine if someone has developed immunity against Hepatitis B after receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine.
- Liver function assessment: Hepatitis B infection can cause liver damage, and this test can help assess the overall liver function by measuring liver enzymes and other markers associated with the infection.
